Guwahati: The Press Club of India (PCI) has condemned the arrest of senior digital media journalist Dilwar Hussain Mozumder by Assam Police, citing an infringement on the freedom of press. Mozumder, who is also the assistant general secretary of the Guwahati Press Club, was detained at Guwahati's Pan Bazar police station on March 25 afternoon.
According to reports, Mozumder was covering a protest against an alleged multi-score scam in the recruitment of the state government-run Assam Co-Operative Apex Bank. He was summoned by the police while taking a news byte from the bank's managing director, Dambaru Saikia.
Mozumder was then arrested under the Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe (Prevention And Atrocities) Act for allegedly hurting the sentiments of a person from the Bodo community. However, the police failed to provide details about the complainant or the incident.
The PCI has urged the Assam Government and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to investigate the matter and ensure that the state police respect the true spirit of the SC/ST Act. The PCI has also expressed concern about the high-handedness of the Assam Police, particularly their refusal to inform Mozumder's family and colleagues about the grounds for his detention.
