December 18, 2024: In a tragic turn of events, a protester died following an altercation with police during the Congress' "Raj Bhavan Chalo" protest in Guwahati on Wednesday. The deceased, identified as 45-year-old Mridul Islam from Boko in South Kamrup, was a member of the Legal Cell of the State Congress.
The protest was part of the Congress' demonstration against the state government's implementation of smart meters, the Adani scandal, and the "One Nation, One Election" proposal. Thousands of Congress supporters gathered at the Raj Bhavan premises to voice their concerns.
Tensions escalated when protesters broke through police barricades and attempted to march towards the Raj Bhavan. In response, the police fired tear gas to disperse the crowd. It was during this confrontation that Mridul Islam reportedly collapsed and was later rushed to the hospital, where he was declared dead.
The Congress party has condemned the police action, accusing them of using excessive force against peaceful protesters. Authorities have yet to comment on the cause of death, but the incident has sparked widespread outrage, with opposition leaders calling for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mr. Islam's death.
