Delhi Likely to Have a Woman Chief Minister as BJP Returns to Power

February 10, 2025: Delhi is on the brink of a historic political shift, as sources indicate that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is likely to appoint a woman as the Chief Minister following its sweeping victory in the Delhi Assembly elections. With 48 out of 70 seats secured, the saffron party has decisively ended the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) decade-long rule in the national capital.

While the official announcement remains pending, insiders suggest that the next Chief Minister will be chosen from among the newly elected BJP legislators, with a strong possibility of a woman being at the helm.

The party is also considering a Deputy Chief Minister from a socially representative background, and the new cabinet is expected to have significant representation of women and Dalit leaders, sources said.

Among the BJP’s victorious candidates, four women legislators won their seats with impressive margins. Rekha Gupta emerged victorious in Shalimar Bagh, securing 68,200 votes and defeating AAP’s Bandana Kumari by 29,595 votes. In Greater Kailash, Shikha Roy defeated AAP heavyweight Saurabh Bharadwaj with 49,594 votes, winning by a margin of 3,188 votes. Poonam Sharma clinched the Wazirpur seat with 54,721 votes, outpacing AAP’s Rajesh Gupta by 11,425 votes. Meanwhile, Neelam Pehalwan secured a resounding victory in Najafgarh, garnering 1,01,708 votes and defeating AAP’s Tarun Kumar by 29,009 votes.

Adding to BJP’s triumph, Parvesh Verma’s win in the New Delhi constituency delivered a symbolic blow to AAP, as he unseated sitting Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Kejriwal had held the seat since 2013, making this defeat a major political upset.

The BJP’s return to power in Delhi after 27 years has sparked intense speculation over its leadership choice. If a woman is appointed as the Chief Minister, it will mark a significant milestone in the city's political landscape. The final decision is expected to be announced soon.
