March 1, 2025: A Bangladeshi smuggler was shot dead in a retaliatory firing by the Border Security Force (BSF) in Tripura's Sepahijala district after a group of smugglers launched an attack on border guards, officials confirmed on Saturday.
According to a BSF statement, a group of 20 to 25 Bangladeshi miscreants illegally entered Indian territory at Putia under Kalamchoura police station on Friday night and met their Indian counterparts. When BSF personnel challenged them, the smugglers retaliated violently, injuring a BSF jawan.
In response to the attack, a BSF soldier fired a round from a pump-action gun in self-defense when the smugglers attempted to snatch their weapons. One of the smugglers sustained injuries and was immediately taken to Bishalgarh hospital, where he later succumbed to his wounds. His body has been sent to the hospital morgue.
The injured BSF jawan is also undergoing treatment at the same hospital.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, and security measures along the India-Bangladesh border have been intensified to prevent further such incursions.
