February 24, 2025: Pakistan's Intelligence Bureau has issued a security alert regarding a potential kidnapping plot by the Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP) during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The extremist group reportedly plans to abduct foreign nationals, particularly targeting Chinese and Arab visitors, to demand ransom.
Intelligence sources suggest ISKP operatives have been monitoring high-traffic areas such as airports, ports, business districts, and residential hubs known to host foreign guests. The group is believed to be securing properties on city outskirts as safe houses, deliberately selecting locations without surveillance cameras and accessible only via motorcycles or rickshaws. Security officials fear that hostages could be moved between these safe houses under the cover of night to evade detection.
The warning adds to Pakistan’s security concerns, given its history of attacks on foreign nationals. The country has previously faced criticism for downplaying such threats. Notable past incidents include the deadly 2024 attack on Chinese engineers in Shangla and the 2009 ambush on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore.
Meanwhile, Afghanistan’s intelligence agency (GDI) has also sounded the alarm, warning of possible ISKP attacks on key locations. Efforts to track missing operatives linked to the group have reportedly intensified.
Adding to the tension, ISKP’s media arm, Al Azaim Media, released a video last year condemning cricket as a tool of Western influence. The video accused the sport of promoting nationalism and ideological propaganda contrary to the group’s extremist beliefs. The Taliban was also criticized for backing Afghanistan’s national cricket team.
As Pakistan hosts the ninth edition of the Champions Trophy, security has become a pressing issue, especially following the host nation’s disappointing start to the tournament. Pakistan has suffered two consecutive defeats, including a six-wicket loss to India on February 23 and another to New Zealand.
With heightened security measures in place, authorities remain on high alert to prevent any potential threats that could overshadow the prestigious tournament.
