March 1, 2025: Hindon Airbase in Ghaziabad marked a significant milestone in regional air connectivity as it welcomed its first Air India Express flight on Saturday. The airline's Kolkata-Hindon service officially commenced operations, providing an alternative transit hub for passengers in the National Capital Region (NCR) and western Uttar Pradesh.
Air India Express is now set to operate direct flights from Hindon to Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Goa, becoming the first airline to serve two airports in the NCR. The move aligns with the government's Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS), aimed at improving domestic air travel options.
Previously, commercial operations at Hindon were limited, with regional carrier Star Air offering services to Kalaburagi and Hubli in Karnataka. The entry of Air India Express is expected to significantly enhance accessibility, offering relief to passengers who previously relied solely on the heavily congested Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi.
The Hindon terminal, managed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), features modern amenities, including eight check-in counters, two conveyor belts, and the capacity to handle 300 passengers per hour. The airport is a strategic alternative for travelers from Ghaziabad, Noida, and nearby regions facing slot constraints at Delhi Airport.
Bookings for the newly introduced flights have witnessed high demand, with more than 85% of seats on the inaugural flight sold. Air India Express has introduced competitive fares, with one-way tickets priced at Rs 4,400 for Ghaziabad-Kolkata, Rs 4,900 for Ghaziabad-Goa, and Rs 6,200 for Ghaziabad-Bengaluru routes.
Meanwhile, another major development in regional aviation is on the horizon, as Noida International Airport in Jewar is expected to become operational by late April or early May, further transforming air travel in the region.
