Guwahati: In a significant crackdown on wildlife trafficking, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) in Guwahati, Assam has seized approximately 14 kg of elephant tusks in Khatira, Bamunigaon in Kamrup district.
The seized tusks have been handed over to the Range Forest Officer of Bamunigaon Range for further investigation.
Two individuals, identified as Suren Rabha (52) and Sankar Boro (48), both residents of Kamrup district, Assam, have been arrested in connection with the illegal trade. According to officials, the duo was attempting to sell the tusks illegally.
The Range Forest Officer confirmed that legal proceedings have been initiated against the accused, who have been booked under multiple sections of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. The arrested individuals face charges under Sections 39(10, 5), 40(1, 2, 2B), 44, 48A, and 49, all of which are punishable under Section 51 of the Act.
Further investigation is being carried out.
