Guwahati: The Assam government during the budget session reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the state's land, language and culture, as outlined in Clause 6 of the Assam Accord.
To achieve this, Finance Minister Ajanta Neog said that the government has examined the recommendations made by the High-Level Committee chaired by Justice Biplab Kr Sharma and decided to implement 32 recommendations within the state's purview.
In her budget speech, Neog said following a cabinet meeting in Lakhimpur on September 12, 2024, the government decided to implement all 52 decisions related to the state government.
In active discussions with the All-Assam Students' Union (AASU), an action plan has been mutually agreed upon to implement 39 recommendations.
Key announcements made by Assam Finance Minister Ajanta Neog include a one-time grant of Rs 100 crore to Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra (SSK) to facilitate research and preservation work. The grant will be disbursed in two equal annual instalments.
Additionally, the Dr Bhupen Hazarika Regional Government Film and Television Institute (DBHRGFTI) will be upgraded to a degree-level institution from its current diploma-level status within a year.
The government also plans to construct multipurpose cultural complexes in all district headquarters of Assam, named Sahityarathi Lakshminath Bezbaruah Bhawan, in three phases. The complexes will feature state-of-the-art auditoriums, seminar halls, art galleries, and more. A total of Rs. 240 crore has been allocated in the budget to cover 12 districts, with a total outlay of Rs. 700 crore for 35 districts.
Furthermore, separate multipurpose cultural complexes will be set up for each tribe and ethnic community in districts and co-districts, with Rs. 5 crore allocated to each complex.
Initially, 20 such auditoria will be established during 2025-26, with Rs. 100 crore allocated towards this initiative.
