March 1, 2025: Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a high-level meeting today to assess the security situation in Manipur following the imposition of President's Rule in the state. The meeting, held at the Ministry of Home Affairs in New Delhi, saw the participation of Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, senior officials from the Manipur government, top army officers, and paramilitary forces.
This marks the first security review meeting chaired by Amit Shah after President’s Rule was imposed in Manipur on February 13. The decision came after former Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned from his post, leading to the suspension of the state assembly, which was set to continue until 2027.
The meeting comes in the wake of a February 20 ultimatum issued by the Governor, urging individuals in possession of illegal and looted arms to surrender them. The ongoing ethnic unrest in Manipur, which began in May 2023, has resulted in the loss of at least 250 lives.
The violence erupted following the 'Tribal Solidarity March' in the hill districts, protesting against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. The unrest has since led to heightened tensions and security concerns in the state.
As the central government intensifies efforts to stabilize the situation, today's meeting is expected to outline further measures to restore law and order in Manipur.
