February 7, 2025: India’s Foreign Secretary, Vikram Misri, confirmed on Friday that 487 presumed Indian nationals in the United States have been issued final removal orders, raising concerns over their potential deportation.
Addressing a press briefing, Misri stated that the Indian government is in close contact with the Trump administration to ensure the safe return of these individuals, should they be confirmed as Indian citizens. He assured that efforts are underway to address the matter through diplomatic channels.
“The Indian government is monitoring the situation closely and engaging with US authorities to resolve issues related to these individuals,” Misri said.
Regarding the deportation process, the foreign secretary referred to the standard operating procedures communicated by US immigration authorities, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). He acknowledged that these procedures have been in place for a long time but emphasized the importance of fair treatment.
Addressing concerns over the alleged mistreatment of deportees, Misri termed it a "valid concern" and assured that India will raise the issue with the US government.
“We will continue to take up any instances of mistreatment that come to our attention. Action must be taken against the ecosystem that facilitates illegal immigration,” he added.
This development comes amid increasing global scrutiny on immigration policies, with governments taking stricter measures against illegal migration.
