February 6, 2025: In a fresh case of illegal immigration, nine Bangladeshi nationals were apprehended in Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills district on Tuesday night. According to officials, the arrests were made during a routine police check at Dalamgre village, near the Indo-Bangladesh border.
During the operation, authorities seized 12 mobile phones with multiple SIM cards, Indian currency, Aadhaar cards, and other incriminating documents from the detained individuals. Two vehicles used for transportation were also confiscated.
Further investigation led to the arrest of three Indian facilitators who were allegedly assisting the illegal immigrants.
The news of the arrests quickly spread on social media after a picture of the detained Bangladeshis surfaced online.
This incident comes just days after Mumbai police apprehended another group of nine Bangladeshi immigrants from Ghatkopar for residing in the city without valid documents. Three children were also found among the detainees, and authorities recovered forged documents from their possession. A case has been registered against them.
In a separate development, an Indian national was shot by the Border Security Force (BSF) while attempting to re-enter India illegally from Bangladesh. The man, identified as Akhtar Jamal Roni, had reportedly traveled to Bangladesh to attend a religious function. He was accompanied by a woman when they attempted to breach the border fence. Security forces stated that despite multiple warnings, the duo engaged in a scuffle with the officials and attempted to snatch a weapon. Acting in self-defense, a BSF personnel fired a single shot, injuring Roni, while the woman managed to escape.
Authorities have increased surveillance along the India-Bangladesh border to curb illegal crossings and ensure national security.
