Meghalaya: Outrage after demolition of 100-year-old Cenotaph in Tura

Tura: A century-old cenotaph honouring Garo war heroes of World War I in Tura, Meghalaya, has been demolished, sparking widespread outrage and condemnation.

The structure, a significant historical landmark, was razed by the district administration, prompting Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma and civil society organizations (CSOs) to visit the site and demand answers.

The Congress party has vehemently condemned the demolition, calling it an insult to the Garo community. They have demanded the removal of the Tura Municipal Board engineer and the ouster of West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Jagdish Chelani.

Deputy Commissioner Jagdish Chelani has defended the demolition, citing reports of unscrupulous activities, including drinking, in the cenotaph area. However, CSOs have criticized his explanation, accusing him of deliberate deception and lack of transparency.

The controversy has led to the formation of a consultative committee, chaired by the Deputy Commissioner, to ensure community participation and representation. However, CSOs have questioned the committee's formation, arguing that public sentiment cannot be easily bulldozed.

The demolition has also sparked concerns about the government's disregard for public memory and historical significance.

The incident has brought together various CSOs, including the Mothers' Union, AHAM, and GSMC, who are demanding justice and accountability.
