Kuki Groups Add Conditions for Meitei Hostages’ Release as Imphal Paralyzed by Shutdown

October 2, 2024: The tense standoff in Manipur continues as Kuki groups negotiating the release of two Meitei hostages have introduced additional demands amid a statewide shutdown that has effectively paralyzed the capital, Imphal. The situation follows the abduction of three Meitei youths by Kuki militants last Friday, with one hostage released shortly thereafter.

As negotiations stalled, the Kuki factions have outlined further conditions for the safe return of the hostages, including the transfer of Kuki inmates from Saijwa Central Jail in Meitei-dominated Imphal to Churachandpur, as well as the establishment of a police station in Island Valley, Kangpokpi.

The Manipur Police chief has been in dialogue with Kuki representatives since Monday, but as of late Tuesday, no substantial progress had been reported. The growing frustration has fueled public protests, leading to a complete shutdown that began early Tuesday morning in Thoubal district and was extended statewide by the Joint Action Committee advocating for the hostages' release.

As part of the shutdown, all businesses have ceased operations, and transport services have been suspended. Government institutions, schools, and colleges remained closed in observance of Gandhi Jayanti, contributing to the disruption. Despite the heightened tensions, authorities reported no incidents of violence during the protest.
