December 26, 2024: In a tragic incident, a young woman lost her life following a brutal attack by a cab driver in the bustling capital city of Assam. The victim, identified as Mousumi Gogoi, succumbed to her injuries after being assaulted by Bhupen Das, who had reportedly been harassing her for months.

The attack occurred on Thursday morning while Mousumi was on her way to work. Eyewitnesses recounted that Das, who had a history of unrequited advances towards the victim, ambushed her and inflicted fatal injuries. Despite being rushed to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Mousumi could not be saved.

Police investigations revealed that Mousumi had repeatedly rejected Das’s romantic proposals, leading to heightened tensions. She had also taken legal action against him, filing a harassment case at Panbazar Police Station. However, her attempts to seek protection were tragically in vain.

DGP GP Singh confirmed via X that Bhupen Das was detained shortly after the incident. The attacker reportedly stabbed himself in a bid to evade justice but was apprehended and taken to a hospital for treatment. Authorities have assured the public of a thorough investigation into the matter.

The gruesome incident has sent shockwaves across Dispur, igniting debates on women’s safety and the systemic failures in addressing harassment complaints.
