December 30, 2024: In a significant move ahead of the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections, former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal made a bold poll promise on Monday, announcing a monthly salary of Rs 18,000 for priests of temples and granthis of gurudwaras if the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) returns to power.
Addressing the media at a press conference, Kejriwal highlighted the selfless contributions of priests and granthis in preserving religious customs and serving society. “Priests and granthis have been the custodians of our religious traditions, but their financial well-being has long been neglected. No one has cared for them. If AAP is given the mandate, we will ensure they receive a monthly salary of Rs 18,000,” he said.
Kejriwal also announced that registration for this scheme would begin the following day, with the process being personally initiated by him at the Hanuman Temple. “I request the BJP not to interfere with the registration process. Blocking this will be akin to committing a sin, as they are our bridge to God,” Kejriwal added, appealing for smooth implementation.
This proposal is in line with the AAP’s ongoing welfare initiatives in the city. Kejriwal referenced previous schemes, such as the Sanjeevani Yojana, aimed at providing free healthcare for senior citizens, and the Mahila Samman Yojana, which offers financial assistance to women.
In addition to the announcement, Kejriwal took a strong stance against the BJP over the issue of alleged illegal Bangladeshi and Rohingya voters in Delhi. He accused the BJP of not taking action despite having access to information regarding the rehabilitation of Rohingyas. “Stop the drama and arrest Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. He knows exactly where Rohingyas have been resettled, yet no action has been taken,” Kejriwal said.
This exchange follows a statement from Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, who had dismissed AAP’s claims of "Operation Lotus" in Delhi for voter manipulation and questioned the likelihood of Rohingyas supporting the BJP.
As the Delhi Assembly elections approach, set to take place before February 2024, both parties are ramping up their election promises and public statements.
