December 31, 2024: In a heated legal battle surrounding the high-profile suicide case of Bengaluru techie Atul Subhash, the counsel for the deceased, Akash Jindal, has argued against granting bail to Subhash's wife, Nikita Singhania, on grounds that she is allegedly attempting to use their child as leverage to secure her release.
Subhash, who reportedly died by suicide on December 9, left behind a 90-minute video and a 40-page note accusing his wife and her family of harassment, including demands for ₹3 crore as part of a divorce settlement. The video explicitly requested that the child not be exploited in legal proceedings.
“The bail application of Nikita and her family was listed today,” said Jindal. “In his suicide video, Atul had mentioned not to let the child be used as a tool for evading the judicial process. That is exactly what is being done now. Her lawyer claimed we are seeking custody behind her back, but that is not true. With the entire family in custody, there is no one to care for the child. Nikita was arrested while absconding and may attempt to flee with the child if granted bail.”
Singhania, her mother, and her brother were arrested following Subhash’s death and are currently under judicial custody. Her bail plea is set to be heard by a Bengaluru court on January 4.
The defense has argued in favor of bail, emphasizing the need for Singhania to be with her child. However, the prosecution has pointed to the severity of the allegations, the risk of flight, and potential misuse of the child’s custody to influence the judicial process.
As the case unfolds, it has drawn attention to the larger issues of harassment, financial abuse, and the legal challenges surrounding domestic disputes. The court's decision on January 4 is expected to be pivotal.
