S. Jaishankar to Address Deportation of Indians in Parliament as Opposition Protests Intensify

February 6, 2025: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is set to make a statement in the Rajya Sabha regarding the deportation of 104 Indian nationals from the United States, a matter that has sparked intense protests by opposition members, disrupting the ongoing Parliament proceedings on Thursday.

The protests erupted as Parliament resumed, with opposition MPs demanding an immediate discussion on the controversial deportation. The MPs also condemned the inhumane conditions in which the deported individuals were sent back, specifically criticizing the use of a US military plane for the deportation.

In response to the opposition's demands, Jaishankar is expected to address the concerns in Parliament and provide clarity on the diplomatic steps taken by the Indian government. Earlier in the day, the External Affairs Minister met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss the situation.

In the Lok Sabha, opposition MPs took to sloganeering and protested in the well of the House, prompting Speaker Om Birla to intervene. "Your matter is with the government. This is the matter of the Ministry of External Affairs. This subject is related to another country. The government has taken cognizance of it," Birla said, urging MPs to refrain from "planned disruptions."

Before the disruption, Congress leader KC Venugopal had moved an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha, requesting the Centre to outline the steps being taken to engage with the Donald Trump administration regarding the deportation issue.

As the debate unfolds, both the government and the opposition continue to emphasize the need for urgent diplomatic measures, with a focus on the treatment of Indian nationals in the US.
