December 17, 2024: The Narendra Modi-led Central government will introduce the highly anticipated "One Nation, One Election" bill in the Lok Sabha today, amid growing political debates and scrutiny. The bill, which seeks to allow simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies, has been listed for introduction during the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament.
Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal is expected to introduce the constitutional amendment bill, which aims to synchronize the electoral cycles of Lok Sabha elections with those of state legislative assemblies. The proposal also extends to the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir, Puducherry, and the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi, aligning their election schedules with the general elections.
The bill, which was approved by the Union Cabinet last week, is part of the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) 2024 electoral manifesto and is a key priority for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. Proponents argue that simultaneous elections would streamline governance, reduce election-related expenses, and ensure better coordination between the Centre and state governments.
However, the bill has sparked opposition from several political parties and activists who warn that it could undermine democratic accountability. Critics argue that the proposal may diminish the autonomy of states, concentrate power with the central government, and potentially dilute the voices of regional parties.
In a related development, the Congress party has issued a whip to its MPs, directing them to oppose the bill. The party has expressed concerns about the impact of simultaneous elections on federalism and the ability of regional parties to hold the government accountable.
Following the introduction of the bill, Union Law Minister Meghwal may request Speaker Om Birla to refer the legislation to a Joint Committee of Parliament for wider consultations and review.
The Winter Session of Parliament, which began on November 25, is entering its final week, with proceedings scheduled to conclude on December 20. The "One Nation, One Election" bill is expected to be a focal point of discussions during this crucial period.
As the political discourse surrounding the bill intensifies, all eyes will be on the outcome of today’s proceedings in the Lok Sabha and whether the proposal gains traction for further deliberation in Parliament.
