Priyanka Gandhi's 'Palestine' Bag Sparks Political Controversy in Parliament

December 16, 2024: Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra made a bold statement in Parliament on Monday, arriving with a bag emblazoned with the word "Palestine." The striking accessory featured symbols of solidarity with the Palestinian people, including a watermelon motif, which has long been associated with resistance in the region. This move, reflective of Gandhi's long-standing support for the Palestinian cause, attracted both admiration and criticism.

The image of Gandhi carrying the "Palestine" bag quickly spread across social media, shared by Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed. While many praised her gesture as a symbol of solidarity with Palestine, it also invited sharp reactions from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra took to the press to comment on the incident, saying, "The Gandhi family has always been carrying the bag of appeasement. The appeasement bag is the reason behind their rout in elections." Patra’s remarks were aimed at accusing the Congress leader of engaging in political appeasement rather than addressing domestic concerns.

In response, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra hit back at the BJP's criticism, telling reporters, "Tell them to do something over the atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh. Talk to the Bangladesh government and not say stupid things." Her remarks underscored her frustration with the BJP's focus on her political symbol while she believes there are more pressing issues at hand.

The incident follows a recent meeting between Priyanka Gandhi and Palestinian diplomat Abed Elrazeg Abu Jazer, where she was seen wearing a black-and-white keffiyeh, a traditional Palestinian scarf. The meeting, held at Gandhi's residence in Delhi, focused on the ongoing conflict in Gaza, with Jazer congratulating Gandhi on her election victory in Wayanad, Kerala. The diplomat also urged India to take a leading role in advocating for a ceasefire in Gaza and aiding the reconstruction of the war-torn region.

Gandhi has consistently voiced her opposition to Israel's military actions in Gaza. Last year, she accused Israel of violating international law during its military operations. She has also criticized the Indian government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not doing enough to mediate peace in the region.

The latest controversy highlights the ongoing political divide in India over international issues, with the Palestinian cause remaining a point of contention between Congress and BJP leaders.
