November 28, 2024: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra officially took her oath as a Member of Parliament (MP) in the Lok Sabha today, marking a significant milestone in her political career. Her oath-taking ceremony was held alongside Congress leader Ravindra Vasantrao Chavan, who also took the oath as an MP on the same day.
This momentous occasion is not only a personal achievement for Priyanka Gandhi but also a historic one for the Nehru-Gandhi family. For the first time in decades, all three members of the prominent political family—Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi—are now serving as MPs in the Parliament. Priyanka's victory in the recent bypolls has cemented her place in the country's political landscape, joining her mother Sonia Gandhi (MP for Raebareli) and brother Rahul Gandhi (MP for Wayanad, after his re-election in 2024) in the House.
Priyanka Gandhi, accompanied by her mother Sonia and supported by her brother Rahul and husband Robert Vadra, arrived at Parliament today to take the oath of office. The family’s presence underscored the symbolic significance of this moment, not just for Priyanka but also for the Congress party.
The Wayanad seat, which Priyanka won in a resounding victory, had been vacated by her brother, Rahul Gandhi, following his decision to retain his Rae Bareli seat after winning two seats in the April 2024 general elections. The bypoll, held alongside the Maharashtra and Jharkhand Assembly elections in 2024, saw Priyanka Gandhi emerge victorious with a massive margin of 4,10,931 votes. She faced a tough challenge in the form of BJP candidate Navya Haridas and CPI's Sathyan Mokeri, in what was a triangular contest in the Congress stronghold.
With Priyanka’s win, Congress now holds a firm grip on Wayanad, continuing its stronghold in the region. This victory also reinforces the growing political stature of Priyanka Gandhi, who has been gaining increasing prominence in the party's leadership.
The oath-taking of Priyanka Gandhi today is expected to mark the beginning of a new phase in her political journey, with many speculating that she will take on a larger role within the Congress party in the coming years.
