December 16, 2024: Nikita Singhania, the prime accused in the high-profile suicide case of Atul Subhash, attempted to evade arrest by changing her location every day, according to police sources. The 28-year-old woman, who had been on the run, was arrested in Gurugram, Haryana, after the Bengaluru Police tracked her down. Nikita’s mother, Nisha Singhania, and brother, Anurag Singhania, were also apprehended in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.
On Sunday, the three accused were sent to 14-day judicial custody following their arrest. Special teams from Bengaluru, dispatched to Uttar Pradesh, found that the Singhanias had locked up their homes and fled after learning about the impending police arrival. The police had placed notices on the walls of their residences, demanding they appear within three days.
The accused managed to evade detection for some time, making it difficult for the police to track them, as they communicated mainly through WhatsApp calls. However, Nikita made a critical mistake by placing a call to a close relative. Police were able to trace the call’s tower location and located her in a paying guest accommodation in the Rail Vihar area of Gurugram, where she was detained.
Nikita was later questioned by the police, who managed to get her to call her mother and brother, enabling the authorities to trace their whereabouts to Jhunsi town in Uttar Pradesh. Both were subsequently arrested. During their transit to Bengaluru, the accused were interrogated for nine hours, ensuring that the couple's young child, a two-year-old boy, was safely placed with relatives.
Upon arrival in Bengaluru late Saturday night, the accused were produced before a court and sent to judicial custody for 14 days. The police may request further custody if their investigation necessitates it. Meanwhile, Nikita’s family is preparing to file a bail application in court.
Nikita has maintained her innocence, claiming she never harassed her husband and had been living separately from him for three years. However, Atul Subhash’s family has filed for custody of the young child, with Bikas Kumar, the brother of the deceased, stating that the family wants to see the child.
The investigation has revealed that Atul Subhash had planned his suicide 15 days before taking the drastic step. He had written a death note three days before his death and had searched for legal matters on Google. An FIR was filed on December 9 under sections 108 and 3 (5) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), based on a complaint by Bikas Kumar accusing the Singhania family of abetting Atul’s suicide.
In addition to Nikita, Nisha, and Anurag, the police are still on the lookout for a fourth suspect, Sushil Singhania, a relative of the accused, who is believed to be involved in the case. The investigation is ongoing.
