One More Nipah Virus Case Confirmed in Kerala, Active Case Stands At 4

September 15, 2023: One more case of Nipah virus has been confirmed in Kerala, taking the total case to 6, according to the data released by state health department on Friday. The active case now stands at 4.



Two death cases have also been recorded due to the infections on August 30 and September 11.



The state health minister’s office informed that the newly infected 39-year-old patient is under observation in a hospital in Kozhikode. The samples of several people who are in the high-risk category in the contact list have been sent for testing.



The state government has strengthened measures to prevent the spread of the infection.



Kerala has shut some schools and offices for one week after two people lost their lives in the fourth outbreak of the virus since the year 2018. On the other hand, the panchayats in the Kozhikode area have also been declared as quarantine zones.



A multi-disciplinary team has been deputed by the Union Health Ministry to support the state in public health measures to deal with this outbreak.



Nipah virus is a bat-borne, zoonotic virus that causes Nipah virus infection in humans and other animals, a disease with a high mortality rate. Along with respiratory illness, it is also known to cause fever, muscular pain, headache, fever, dizziness, and nausea.
