December 18, 2024: National Security Advisor Ajit Doval met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Wednesday to discuss the China-India border issue and broader bilateral ties. The meeting, held in Beijing, marked the 23rd round of the Special Representatives' talks on boundary matters, resuming after a five-year hiatus since the last meeting in 2019 in New Delhi.
The discussions come in the wake of the October 21 agreement on disengagement and patrolling in eastern Ladakh, a significant step toward easing tensions along the disputed border. Both officials were expected to address a wide range of issues to rebuild bilateral relations and foster trust.
In a statement released by the Chinese foreign ministry, Beijing emphasized its willingness to collaborate with New Delhi to implement "important common understandings" reached by the leaders of the two countries. The ministry expressed hopes of bringing bilateral ties "back on track as soon as possible."
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian, ahead of the talks, highlighted the need for both nations to respect each other's core interests and major concerns, strengthen mutual trust through dialogue, and address differences with sincerity and good faith.
The high-level meeting underscores the importance of sustained diplomatic engagement as both countries work to resolve longstanding issues and foster stability in the region.
