Kolkata rape and murder: Mamata Banerjee to lead protest march seeking death penalty for accused

August 16, 2024: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will lead a protest rally at 4 pm today, demanding justice for the junior doctor who was brutally raped and murdered inside RG Kar College and Hospital seminar hall on August 9.

This came a day after CM Banerjee accused the BJP and CP (M) of attempting to politicise the case. The rally is also in response to the Calcutta High Court’s decision to transfer the investigation from the Kolkata Police to the CBI on August 13.

Earlier, CM Mamata Banerjee set Sunday as deadline for the CBI to secure the death penalty for the accused, who has been arrested. The move follows accusations from protesters that the police mishandled the investigation and allegations that the Trinamool Congress attempted to destroy evidence.
