February 8, 2025: People's Democratic Party (PDP) leader Iltija Mufti has claimed that she and her mother, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, have been placed under house arrest. The move allegedly came as Mehbooba Mufti was preparing to visit Sopore in Baramulla district, where a civilian truck driver was killed in army firing earlier this week.
The deceased, Waseem Majeed Mir, was reportedly shot on Wednesday night after he failed to stop at a checkpoint in Baramulla. His death has sparked widespread reactions from political leaders in the region.
Taking to social media, Iltija Mufti expressed her frustration, saying, “My mother & I both have been placed under house arrest. Our gates have been locked up because she was meant to visit Sopore where Waseem Mir was shot dead by the army.”
Iltija also revealed that she had planned to visit Kathua to meet the family of Makhan Din, a 26-year-old man from Batodi village, who allegedly died by suicide due to police “harassment.” Authorities claim that Din was associated with a militant group responsible for the July 2024 Badnotta army convoy attack, which resulted in the deaths of four soldiers.
She further remarked, “Nothing has changed in Kashmir even after elections. Now even comforting the families of victims is being criminalised.”
Her allegations come amid strong reactions from various political leaders in Jammu and Kashmir, who have condemned the recent deaths and called for accountability.
