Army Vehicle Falls into Gorge in Bandipora, 2 Soldiers Dead, 3 Critically Injured

January 4, 2025: Tragedy struck in Jammu and Kashmir’s Bandipora district on Saturday when an Army vehicle skidded off the road near the Wular Viewpoint and plunged into a deep gorge, resulting in the deaths of two soldiers and leaving three others critically injured.

The incident occurred amidst challenging weather conditions marked by cold waves and fog that have gripped the Kashmir Valley over the past month.

Dr. Masarat Iqbal Wani, Medical Superintendent of District Hospital Bandipora, confirmed the casualties, stating, “Five injured were brought here, out of which two were brought dead. The three critically injured soldiers were resuscitated and then referred to Srinagar for further treatment.”

The Army vehicle was reportedly traveling along a mountainous route when it lost traction, leading to the devastating fall. Officials have ruled out any terrorist involvement in the incident.

This marks the second such tragedy in the region in just a week. On Tuesday, five soldiers lost their lives and five others sustained injuries when their vehicle plunged into a rivulet near the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district.

Adding to the challenges in the region, the Meteorological Department has issued weather alerts, including a 'yellow' alert for Saturday and an 'orange' alert for Sunday, warning of heavy snowfall in the valley's middle and higher reaches. The adverse weather conditions have prompted authorities to advise caution and limit travel.

Efforts are underway to ensure the safety of personnel operating in the area, and further details about the Bandipora incident are awaited. The Army and local authorities have extended their condolences to the families of the deceased soldiers.

The incident highlights the persistent dangers faced by the Armed Forces in safeguarding the nation, particularly under extreme weather conditions and challenging terrain.
