December 18, 2024: The absence of 19 BJP MPs, including senior leaders Nitin Gadkari, Giriraj Singh, and Jyotiraditya Scindia, from a crucial Lok Sabha session on Tuesday has stirred controversy within the party. Sources indicate that the BJP is set to issue notices to these lawmakers for defying a three-line whip that mandated attendance.
The session was pivotal as Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal introduced the One Nation, One Election Bill, a cornerstone of the government’s legislative agenda. The Bill aims to synchronize elections across India, proposing significant amendments to the Constitution. Despite heated exchanges and sharp criticism from the opposition, the Bill’s introductory phase passed with 269 votes in favor and 198 against.
The opposition labeled the Bill as a "dictatorial" move and an attack on the federal structure. Addressing these concerns, Meghwal assured Parliament that the proposed legislation respects the autonomy and powers of the states. He dismissed allegations that the Bill violated the basic structure doctrine, emphasizing its adherence to constitutional principles.
Adding to the legislative push, the Union Territories Amendment Bill was also introduced to synchronize elections in Delhi, Puducherry, and Jammu and Kashmir with the Lok Sabha polls.
While the introduction of the Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill required a simple majority, its passage will demand a two-thirds majority—a significant challenge for the ruling party in the coming days.
The absence of key BJP leaders during such a critical session has raised questions about internal discipline and unity within the party. With notices reportedly in the pipeline, the party is expected to take a firm stance to address the breach of its directive.
