March 5, 2025: While responding to a query by Amguri MLA Prodip Hazarika regarding preservation of Govt files, General Administration department minister Ranjit Kumar Dass talked about digitalization of govt files and maps etc which is being executed by AMTRON (Assam electronics Development Corporation limited). Dass shared that digitalization of approximately 4.5 Lakh govt files, dating from 1774 to 2000 is currently under process. Even 5000 historical maps that date back to 1800s are being digitalized.
Dass revealed that approximately 4.5 Lakh govt files, dating 1974 to 2000, around 31,000 govt reports dating back to 1874, 5000 historical maps from 1800s, India Gazettes from 1860 to 1969, Calcutta Gazettes from 1843 to 1958 and Assam Gazette from 1874 to 1992 are preserved. All of these documents can be accessed from the official website of the Assam State Archives.
After digitalization of many Govt services, this step to preserve the Govt files etc digitally is a progressive one. This digitalization process in Assam is essentially inspired by nationwide digitalization drive pioneered by PM Narendra Modi.
Ranjit Kumar Dass also said that the Govt also plans to construct a contemporary archives building equipped with latest facilities to preserve documents.
