December 28, 2020: Assam education minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday tabled 'The Repealing Bill, 2020' to close the madrassas of the state.

"We've introduced a Bill whereby all Madrassas will be converted into institutes of general education and no madrassa will be established by govt in future. We're happy to introduce this Bill to bring truly secular curriculum in education system," said Sarma after tabling the Bill.

Regarding the opposition of Congress and AIUDF, he said "we are determined that this Bill needs to be passed and it will be passed."

The AIUDF termed the day as a Black day and alleged that Sarma brought the Bill to appease the RSS. It also demanded to replace the word 'repeal' with 'modernise.'

Once the Bill is passed, the practice of running Madrassa by the Government will come to an end.
