June 9, 2021: The Forest and Environment Department of Assam has declared Dehing Patkai Wildlife Sanctuary as a National Park.
With this Assam has now seven national parks and became the second state in the country to have the highest number of National Parks.
Raimona Sanctuary which was announced as the sixth national park on the occasion of World Environment Day by Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has been officially declared as the National Park by the Forest and Environment Department today.
Taking to Twitter, the Forest and Environment Minister Parimal Suklabaidya informed that, “Raimona and Dihing Patkai National Parks have been formally notified, adding to Assam's total tally of NPs to 7. Assam has become the second state in the country to have the highest number of NPs.”
The Dihing Patkai National Park located in Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts; the 111.19 sq km Dehing Patkai was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 2004. It is home to 47 mammal, 47 reptile, and 310 butterfly species.
