April 5, 2025: After a prolonged delay, the Dispur Police has finally registered a case against former NRC Coordinator Prateek Hajela following a directive from the court. The case, numbered 309/25, has been lodged under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including 120B (criminal conspiracy), 403 (dishonest misappropriation of property), 409 (criminal breach of trust by a public servant), and 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property).
According to reports, despite several complaints filed against Hajela in different police stations since 2022, no formal case had been registered against him until now. One of the key complaints was lodged by a woman named Gitika Bhattacharya at Dispur Police Station, accusing Hajela of corruption and misappropriation of funds during his tenure as NRC Coordinator.
However, for reasons still unknown, the police had refrained from registering the FIR. Left with no option, the complainant approached the court, seeking legal intervention. In August last year, the court had ordered the registration of the case, yet the directive remained unexecuted for months.
Now, in compliance with the court’s order, Dispur Police has finally registered the FIR, bringing the matter back into public discourse. The developments raise serious questions over the delay in police action and the handling of complaints against high-profile officials.
Further investigation into the allegations is expected to follow.
