Guwahati: A joint operation between the Mizoram Environment, Forests & Climate Change Department and Assam Rifles led to the arrest of three Myanmar nationals for allegedly trafficking exotic animals near Zokhawthar, a trade town in Champhai district.



The operation, conducted on Thursday, resulted in the rescue of several animals, including three Patagonian Maras, 24 African Spurred Tortoises, and one Albino Burmese Python, valued at approximately Rs 1.31 crore.



The arrested individuals, identified as Thawngsuangmunh (26), Biakzapiang (26), and Jeecy Lalnunmawia (31), were booked under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. They were produced before the judicial magistrate in Champhai and remanded to judicial custody at Champhai district jail.



It may be mentioned that six Mizoram districts, including Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual, and Serchhip, serve as entry points for contraband smuggled from Myanmar's Chin State, including drugs and exotic wildlife.
