April 5, 2025: A major controversy has erupted in Assam’s Lakhimpur district after a gamosa presented on behalf of the Chief Minister was found to have been given to a known thief, leading to public outrage and a chain of alarming events.
The incident took place in Bacha village under the Panigaon Police Station, where a man identified as Chida Das — a known thief with multiple theft cases registered against him — received a ceremonial Bihu gamosa presented in the name of the Chief Minister. The gamosa was handed over to him by the village gaonburah, Bishnu Kumar Das, as part of a local Bihu celebration.
However, shortly after a photo of Chida Das receiving the gamosa surfaced on social media, it sparked widespread criticism and media attention. The public expressed shock that someone with a criminal background was honored with such a symbolic gesture from the state’s highest office.
The situation escalated further when, reportedly under the cover of night, Chida Das allegedly attacked the house of the village gaonburah. He is said to have thrown stones, damaging property and household items. Following the attack, Bishnu Kumar Das filed an official complaint against Chida Das at the Panigaon Police Station.
According to police sources, Chida Das is currently absconding, and efforts are underway to apprehend him. The incident has raised serious questions about vetting processes during public events and has put local administration under scrutiny.
Residents of Bacha village are demanding accountability and calling for stronger measures to prevent such lapses in the future. Meanwhile, the Chief Minister's Office has not yet issued an official statement regarding the matter.
