Tura: The state government has established a 28-member committee tasked with preserving the rich culture and heritage of the Garo community.
The initiative comes in the wake of widespread debate sparked by the recent demolition of the cenotaph at Lower Babupara in Tura, underscoring the urgency to protect the region’s historical legacy.
As per a notification released on April 3, the committee will be chaired by Cabinet Minister Marcuise N Marak. It includes prominent figures such as Deputy Speaker Timothy D Shira, Secretary in-charge of Arts and Culture RP Marak, and GHADC Chief Executive Member Albinius R Marak, among others.
The panel’s mandate includes identifying and assessing sites of historical significance tied to Garo culture, as well as recommending measures to ensure their protection and conservation. Beyond this, the committee is tasked with proposing a comprehensive framework to promote and preserve Garo traditions, language, and overall cultural identity. To achieve this, it will engage with various stakeholders to gather diverse perspectives and insights.
