April 5, 2025: Indian PM Narendra Modi’s first visit to Sri Lanka after President Dissanayake took charge met with grand welcome. The visit has marked a significant milestone in the countries relationship, with both nations signing seven key agreements in defence, energy, digital infrastructure, health and trade sector. The agreements aim to bolster cooperation and strengthen ties between the two countries, amidst concern over China’s growing influence over Indian Ocean region.
PM Modi was also honoured with the highest civilian award of Sri Lanka, Mithra Vibhushana, recognizing his efforts in strengthening the ties between the two countries.
Key agreements:
Defence: Both the countries have signed key defence deals, paving the way for joint maritime surveillance, military exercises and equipment support.
Fishermen’s concerns: PM Modi has announced that Sri Lanka has agreed to the immediate release of Indian fisherman and the prompt return of their boats, addressing a long standing dispute over fishing boats.
Energy sector: A joint venture between both the countries power sectors has been signed to develop a 120 megawatt solar power plant in Trincomalee, addressing Sri Lanka’s growing energy needs.
The two countries have also agreed to lower interest rates on loans, providing relief to Sri Lanka amidst its debt crisis. Additionally, India will provide 2.4 billion Lankan rupees for the development of Eastern States.
