President Biden to Host Final Diwali Celebration at the White House with Indian American Community

October 28, 2024: President Joe Biden will host a Diwali celebration at the White House this evening, welcoming a diverse gathering of Indian Americans from across the country. This event marks a continuation of the administration's tradition of honoring the Festival of Lights.

The evening's festivities will commence with President Biden lighting a Diya lamp in the Blue Room, a symbolic gesture that honors the significance of Diwali. Following this, the President will address attendees at a reception dedicated to celebrating Indian American culture and contributions.

As this is his final Diwali celebration in office, given that he is not seeking re-election, the occasion carries added significance. The White House has highlighted a special introduction during the event: a video message from Sunita "Suni" Williams, a celebrated NASA astronaut and retired Navy Captain. Currently aboard the International Space Station, Williams has previously shared Diwali greetings from space, embracing her heritage by including traditional Indian items in her celebrations.

"Suni is a practicing Hindu and has brought elements of her culture, such as samosas and copies of the Upanishads and Bhagavad Gita, to space," the White House stated, underscoring her commitment to sharing her cultural identity.

The celebration will also feature performances by Nootana, a classical South Asian dance and music ensemble based in Washington, D.C., alongside the Marine Corps Band, enriching the evening with vibrant cultural expressions.
