Israeli Military Kills Hamas Chief Yahya Sinwar in Southern Gaza Following Year-Long Pursuit

OCTOBER 18, 2024- In a significant development, the Israeli military has confirmed the death of Yahya Sinwar, the 61-year-old leader of the Hamas organization, in a firefight on October 16, 2024, in southern Gaza. The IDF (Israel Defense Forces) announced that Sinwar was tracked and eliminated after a year-long operation involving the Shin Bet internal security agency. Sinwar was identified with two other fighters in the Rafah district and was killed following a brief confrontation.

Drone footage released by the IDF showed Sinwar’s final moments as he attempted to evade capture, injured and desperate. Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari stated that no hostages were found near Sinwar, who was carrying a gun and 40,000 shekels.

Sinwar, believed to be the mastermind behind the deadly October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks, was regarded as one of the most significant targets in Israel’s ongoing military efforts in Gaza. His death comes after previous reports that Hamas military chief Mohammed Deif was also killed earlier this year.
