Guwahati: The Gauhati High Court has reserved its decision on the bail plea of University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) Chancellor Mahbubul Hoque in his second case, with the decision expected to be pronounced tomorrow.
In a related development, the High Court has issued an order preventing the arrest of Hoque in connection with a third case registered at Gossaigaon Police Station. This case was filed based on a complaint by Lilawati Basumatary, the mother of a student, who alleged that the USTM authorities unfairly assigned an examination centre nearly 400 km away from her home.
The complaint further alleged that despite repeated appeals, the USTM authorities failed to reconsider their decision and instead offered to increase Kripanjali's examination marks. The student's mother lodged a formal complaint at Gossaigaon Police Station, leading to the registration of a case against the university administration.
Hoque was arrested on February 22, 2025, in connection with allegations of irregularities during the CBSE Class 12 Physics examination.
Last week, he was granted bail in one case, but his second case is still pending.
