Whales aren’t just big, even their pee is a big deal

March 11, 2025: Whales aren’t just largest living creature on earth; they are also contributing to the world in a large way. As funny as it sounds, whales pee and poop are great source of nutrients.

Whales feed deep in the ocean, and poop in the surface, moving tons of nutrients to the surface from deep water.

Now research has found that a lot of nutrients move thousands of miles through the urine of whales, from as far as Alaska to Hawaii. Scientists call this movement a conveyor belt or the great whale pee funnel.

For example, gray whales travel nearly 7000 miles and humpback whales travel for about 5000 miles, where they burn off about 200 pounds every day, urinating vast amounts of nitrogen rich area.

Scientists say that this movement of nitrogen can be beneficial for the growth of algae and other foods for other fishes and many invertebrates, thus playing an important role in maintaining eco system.
