Assam Appoints First Ever Director for Directorate of Prosecution

March 14, 2025: In a significant move towards strengthening the justice delivery system, the Assam Government has appointed the first-ever Director of Prosecution for the newly created Directorate of Prosecution. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the development on his social media handle, highlighting Assam as one of the pioneering states to establish a dedicated prosecution cadre to assist law enforcement and the judiciary.



As per an official notification issued by the Home and Political Department, Shri Makhan Phukan has been appointed as the Director of Prosecution, Assam, for a temporary period of four months. His appointment comes with a pay scale ranging from ₹1,99,100 to ₹2,24,100, along with other admissible allowances.



Additionally, three officials have been appointed as Deputy Directors of Prosecution—Shri Dhanesh Das, Shri Santanu Bhattacharyya, and Shri Manash Haloi—for the same tenure of four months. Their pay scale ranges from ₹1,63,030 to ₹2,19,090, plus other allowances.



The appointments mark a crucial step in Assam's legal framework, ensuring an impartial and efficient prosecution system to support the judiciary. The other terms and conditions of service for these officials will be decided later.



The notification was issued by Partha Pratim Majumdar, Secretary to the Government of Assam, Home and Political Department, on March 14, 2025.
