March 14, 2025: The Economic Offences Court on Friday rejected the bail application of Kannada actor Ranya Rao in connection with a high-profile gold smuggling case.
Ranya Rao, 34, was arrested on March 3 at Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru, after being caught with 14 kg of gold bars worth ₹12.56 crore upon her arrival from Dubai. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) opposed her bail plea during Wednesday’s hearing, arguing that her release could obstruct the ongoing investigation. The agency also expressed concerns over possible tampering with evidence and influencing of witnesses.
Meanwhile, the bail application of the second accused, Tarun Konduru, has been scheduled for hearing on Saturday at 3 p.m.
The case has taken a political turn as Ranya Rao is the stepdaughter of senior IPS officer Ramachandra Rao, who serves as the Chairman and Managing Director of the Karnataka State Police Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited. In light of this, the Karnataka government has appointed Additional Chief Secretary Gaurav Gupta to investigate whether Ramachandra Rao had any involvement in the smuggling operation.
Additionally, the government has directed the CID to probe potential lapses by police officers at the Kempegowda International Airport regarding the handling of the case.
Ranya Rao has alleged mistreatment during her detention, claiming that DRI officials verbally abused her and coerced her into signing documents without proper consent. However, the DRI has denied these accusations, asserting that all procedures were conducted lawfully and with due respect.
The case continues to unfold, drawing significant public and media attention.
