February 17, 2025: A 4.0 magnitude earthquake shook Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) early Monday morning, sending panic-stricken residents rushing out of their homes. The tremors were felt across several parts of the city, with the epicentre identified near Durgabai Deshmukh College of Special Education in south Delhi’s Dhaula Kuan.
According to the National Centre for Seismology, the earthquake struck at 5:36 AM at a depth of five kilometres. Officials reported a loud rumbling sound accompanying the tremors, which could be attributed to the shallow depth of the quake and the movement of tectonic plates.
Several videos circulating on social media showed ceiling fans shaking and people gathering outside their homes in fear. However, no immediate reports of casualties or property damage have been received. The Delhi Police and Fire Department confirmed that they had not received any distress calls related to the quake.
The Dhaula Kuan region, which has a lake nearby, has experienced low-intensity earthquakes in the past, with a 3.3 magnitude tremor recorded in 2015.
Following the earthquake, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged citizens to remain calm and vigilant for potential aftershocks. Authorities have advised people to take necessary precautions and stay informed through official sources.
