4 Militants Arrested in Manipur; Governor Urges Surrender of Illegal Weapons

February 20, 2025: Security forces in Manipur have arrested four militants linked to at least two different armed groups from various districts, police said on Thursday.

Among those arrested is an active member of the United Kuki National Army, apprehended in Churachandpur on Tuesday. The other three are cadres of the banned Kangleipak Communist Party (PWG), captured from Thoubal and Imphal East districts on Wednesday.

Authorities confirmed that the militants were involved in extortion, kidnapping, arms smuggling, and drug trafficking. In addition to the arrests, security forces recovered a substantial cache of arms and ammunition from Thoubal and Tengnoupal districts over the past two days. The seized items included rifles, pistols, hand grenades, and mortars.

Meanwhile, Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla has made a strong appeal to all communities to surrender looted and illegally possessed weapons within the next seven days. Assuring no punitive action against voluntary surrender, he urged the youth from both the valley and hill regions to take a step toward peace.

“The people of Manipur have endured immense hardship for over 20 months. I sincerely request everyone to return looted weapons to the nearest police station, outpost, or security forces camp within seven days,” Bhalla stated.

While promising leniency for those who surrender, the governor also warned of strict action against individuals found in possession of illegal arms after the deadline. “Returning these weapons will be a powerful step toward restoring peace. After the given timeframe, legal measures will be taken against offenders,” he added.

Reaffirming the government's commitment to stability, Bhalla encouraged collective efforts to rebuild the state and ensure a secure future for its youth. “Let us move forward with trust and hope for a brighter Manipur. Choose peace,” he urged.
