January 19, 2025: In his first Mann Ki Baat broadcast of the year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi applauded the Election Commission (EC) for its advancements in technology and its commitment to fair elections. The prime minister's remarks came just days ahead of the EC’s foundation day on January 25, celebrated as National Voters' Day.
Highlighting the EC's role in strengthening democracy, PM Modi said, “It has used the power of technology to strengthen people's power.” He urged citizens to actively participate in elections to uphold and empower democracy.
The PM’s praise for the EC comes amidst recurring criticism from opposition parties, who have raised questions about the integrity of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and accused the body of bias. His comments can be seen as a firm endorsement of the EC and its modernization efforts.
Reflecting on India’s democratic journey, PM Modi noted that skeptics doubted India's ability to thrive as a democracy post-independence. However, he said, India, as the “mother of democracy,” has repeatedly proven them wrong.
To inspire citizens, he played audio clips from constituent assembly members, including Rajendra Prasad, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, and Syama Prasad Mookerjee. Their vision for a united and inclusive India, he said, remains relevant today. “We should take inspiration from them to build an India of which our Constitution makers would have been proud,” he added.
This year’s Republic Day marks the 75th anniversary of the Constitution's implementation, a milestone PM Modi emphasized as an occasion for reflection and gratitude.
The broadcast also touched on the ongoing Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, which the prime minister described as a powerful symbol of unity. “People of all castes and regions have come together, leaving behind discrimination,” he said. He praised the participation of youth in the event, calling it a testament to India’s civilizational strength and its promising future.
PM Modi lauded the Maha Kumbh’s global appeal, calling it a matter of pride for every Indian. “This grand event strengthens our civilisational roots and assures us of a golden future,” he concluded.
The program, usually held on the last Sunday of the month, was advanced to the third Sunday to avoid clashing with Republic Day celebrations.
