January 19, 2025: A massive fire broke out at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, on Sunday evening, triggering panic among pilgrims. The fire erupted in Sector 19 of the tent city, where several makeshift camps are set up for visitors.
Authorities confirmed that several fire tenders were rushed to the spot to control the blaze. A team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has also been deployed to assist the firefighting and rescue operations.
According to initial reports, the fire originated at one of the campsite areas and rapidly spread, engulfing multiple tents in its wake. Eyewitnesses reported hearing explosions, suspected to be caused by at least 20-25 gas cylinders blasting during the incident.

The Maha Kumbh Mela, which began on January 13, 2025, and is scheduled to continue until February 26, has drawn millions of devotees to Prayagraj. As of January 18, more than 77.2 million pilgrims have participated in the holy event, taking a dip at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers.
There are no immediate reports of casualties or injuries, but the incident has raised concerns about safety measures at the massive religious gathering. Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire and assessing the damage.
