Maha Kumbh 2025: Prayagraj Faces Unprecedented Influx of Pilgrims Ahead of Mahashivratri

February 24, 2025: The Maha Kumbh in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj has already set historical records as the largest religious gathering, and the momentum continues to build with Mahashivratri approaching on February 26. The final 'Amrit Snan' of the event is expected to witness an even greater influx of devotees, further straining the city's transportation infrastructure.

In just 42 days since the grand festival began on January 13, over 60 crore pilgrims have taken the sacred dip at Triveni Sangam. With more devotees rushing to reach the holy confluence, Prayagraj's rail, air, and road networks are experiencing extreme congestion.

On Sunday evening, chaotic scenes unfolded at various railway stations as thousands of devotees scrambled to board the 102 special trains being operated to and from Prayagraj, with 50 departing from the junction alone. The previous day saw a staggering 338 trains in operation, including 149 special trains. Similarly, Naini, Chheoki, and Jhunsi stations also experienced an overwhelming rush, with additional special trains deployed to accommodate the heavy footfall.

Road traffic in the city was equally affected, as a massive 25-kilometer-long jam brought movement to a standstill early Sunday. Vehicles remained stuck for hours before authorities managed to ease congestion. Although the jam has since cleared, the traffic situation remains a concern as more pilgrims arrive for the concluding rituals.

Meanwhile, Prayagraj Airport has witnessed record-breaking passenger traffic, with over 4.5 lakh fliers arriving since the Maha Kumbh commenced. A total of 2,106 flights, including 1,416 chartered planes, have been arranged to facilitate air travel for devotees. Officials have announced additional flights in response to the continuous surge of pilgrims.

According to an official statement released on Sunday, more than half of India’s estimated 110 crore Sanatan followers have already taken a dip in the holy confluence, and this number is expected to exceed 65 crore by the final ‘Amrit Snan’ on February 26.

In response to the overwhelming crowd, the Uttar Pradesh government has ramped up preparations to ensure smooth arrangements for the devotees partaking in the final holy bath. Authorities are working tirelessly to manage the large-scale movement of pilgrims and ensure their safety in the concluding days of the Maha Kumbh.
