IT Department Seizes 52 kg of Gold and Rs 10 Crore in Cash Linked to Lokayukta Raid on Ex-RTO Constable

December 20, 2024: In a significant development, the Income Tax Department has seized 52 kg of gold and Rs. 10 crore in cash from an abandoned vehicle near Mandora village, linking the discovery to the ongoing investigation into former RTO constable Saurabh Sharma and his associate, Chandan Singh Gaur. This latest seizure comes as both individuals are already under investigation in a disproportionate assets case following a raid conducted by the Lokayukta’s Special Police Establishment (SPE).

On Thursday, the Lokayukta's raid on Sharma and Gaur's residences unearthed a staggering Rs 2.5 crore in cash, along with gold, silver jewelry, and property documents from Sharma’s home in Arera Colony. The estimated value of these assets is believed to exceed Rs. 3 crore. The raid has raised further questions about the illicit wealth amassed by the duo, who are already facing allegations of corruption and illegal land use.

Saurabh Sharma, who voluntarily retired from the Transport Department a year ago, has since ventured into real estate, with substantial investments in multiple properties, a hotel, and a school. His assets span across several districts, including Bhopal. Investigations into his wealth were initiated following complaints of corruption and illegal activities linked to land usage, particularly a school allegedly built on reserved land.

Sharma, originally from Gwalior, had joined the Transport Department on a compassionate appointment after his father's death. Over the course of his 12-year tenure, his assets and lifestyle underwent a drastic transformation, raising suspicions among colleagues and officials. Tensions with bureaucrats and allegations surrounding his business ventures prompted his early retirement to focus on expanding his real estate portfolio.

Both Sharma and Gaur have been booked under the Prevention of Corruption Act, with the ADG of the Lokayukta, Jaideep Prasad, confirming that investigations are still ongoing. Authorities suspect that the gold and cash found in the abandoned vehicle could be linked to the illicit wealth amassed by the two individuals, and further revelations are expected as the probe continues.
