Coimbatore Man Pays ₹80,000 Alimony in Coins, Stuns Family Court

December 20, 2024: In a surprising turn of events at the Additional Family Court in Coimbatore, a 37-year-old man walked into the courtroom on Wednesday carrying ₹80,000 in coins as payment for his estranged wife’s alimony. The unusual move left everyone in the court stunned and led to a series of reactions from the presiding judge.

The man, identified as a call taxi owner and driver, had been ordered by the court to pay an interim maintenance of ₹2 lakh to his wife. In a bold move, he arrived at the court with 20 bundles of ₹2 and Re 1 coins, totaling ₹80,000. The coins were packed in two white bags that he carried with him as he entered the courtroom.

A video circulating on social media shows the man walking out of the court, placing the bags filled with coins inside his car. As he submitted the unusual form of payment, the judge reportedly instructed him to replace the coins with currency notes.

On Thursday, the following day, the man complied with the court's directive and replaced the coins with ₹80,000 in banknotes, which he submitted to the court. However, the judge also emphasized that the remaining ₹1.2 lakh of the alimony amount would need to be paid soon.

While the reason behind the man’s decision to pay in coins remains unclear, his bold gesture has certainly caught the public’s attention, raising questions about the unconventional methods some individuals might resort to in legal matters.
