December 20, 2024: Om Prakash Chautala, the former Chief Minister of Haryana and prominent leader of the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), passed away at the age of 89 on Friday. He died after suffering a cardiac arrest at his residence in Gurugram. Despite being rushed to the hospital, medical efforts could not save his life.
Chautala was a key figure in Haryana's political landscape, having served as the Chief Minister for a record four terms, spanning from 1989 to 2005. His tenure was marked by significant developments and his influence on the state's politics. Born in January 1935, Chautala was the son of Chaudhary Devi Lal, a stalwart in Indian politics and the 6th Deputy Prime Minister of India, as well as a former Chief Minister of Haryana.
Known for his political acumen, Chautala had a long and eventful career. He was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) seven times, establishing himself as a dominant force in Haryana's political scene. His leadership also extended to national politics, where he played an important role in the formation of coalitions, including the Third Front in 2009, which was a non-Congress and non-NDA alliance. Chautala was also a member of the Rajya Sabha from 1987 to 1990.
Despite his political success, Chautala's career was marred by controversy, most notably the recruitment scam involving the appointment of junior basic teachers in Haryana during his last term as Chief Minister. In 2013, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison for his involvement in the scandal, though he was released from Tihar Jail in July 2021 after serving nearly a decade behind bars.
Chautala's death marks the end of an era in Haryana's political history. His legacy, defined by both achievements and controversies, will continue to shape the state's political discourse for years to come.
