January 30, 2025: A fire broke out in 15 tents at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj on Thursday morning, officials said. The blaze erupted near Chatnag Ghat but was swiftly contained by the fire department. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries have been reported.
According to a fire department official quoted by news agency ANI, fire tenders faced difficulties reaching the site due to the absence of access roads. However, emergency responders managed to extinguish the flames in time, preventing further damage.
The incident follows a tragic stampede on Wednesday in the Sangam area, which claimed the lives of 30 people and left over 60 injured. The chaos unfolded as millions of devotees gathered to take a holy dip on the auspicious occasion of Mauni Amavasya.
This is not the first fire-related incident at the ongoing Maha Kumbh. On January 19, a massive fire broke out in the Sector 19 campsite after the explosion of three gas cylinders. While the fire department managed to control the blaze, no casualties were reported in that incident either.
Authorities are on high alert to prevent further mishaps as the religious congregation continues to attract millions of pilgrims.
